Fat Burner

Fat Burner
I get a fat burner in my smoothie. Does anyone know what this is or what it does?

I go to a gas station called Sheetz. It has a coffee bar in it and I get my smoothie with fat burner in it but I am not quite sure what it does or how it works. I pay $1.29 extra for it. I am 17 and trying to lose weight because I feel that I am overweight at 5′5 1/2″ and 134-137 lbs usually. What does the fat burner do and is it worth it to buy it?

To follow up on what Jennifer said, if the “fat burner” isn’t caffeine or other stimulant, it’s probably just a bogus ingredient that some company or other paid for a study to say it increases metabolism.

In any case, let me explain why this is bad for you. If it’s bogus and doesn’t do anything, you’re just wasting money. If it does boost your metabolism, this is giving your body an energy boost it’s normally not used to burning.

If you can drive, get in your car, start it up in park, floor the gas and hold it there. What’s the car doing? Does it sound good for the car? It’s revving up like crazy because you’re pumping the gas that’s inside it at an insane rate but it’s not going anywhere. It soon redlines and within seconds you’re seriously damaging the engine. A fat burner does the same thing to your body: your body has to work very hard to burn off the energy it’s squeezing out of you if you’re not doing anything with it. Keep doing that and you’re well on your way to Type II diabetes or other lifelong, serious health problems.

So, really, the best way to lose weight is to exercise. Exercise is healthy because it’s constructively using the excess energy your body stored up, instead of burning it off any way it can. It’ll also get you in shape, which is a wonderful feeling. Beautiful people are healthy people — if you lose weight by dieting, you’ll just be skinny and ugly because you’ll be sickly and irritable. The difference between exercise vs. starving + drugs is about as clear as the difference between Allison Stokke and Amy Winehouse.

The problem with exercise is that people find ways to make exercise as miserable as possible, like running on a treadmill. The people I know who got in shape found fun or involving ways to do it. One got addicted to the “Dance Dance Revolution” video game. Another started biking everywhere. One started swing dancing, and even met his spouse that way. I run, but I do so with friends; other times I dance at clubs. Another friend plays street basketball.

Don’t force yourself to do something that makes you miserable; you’ll quit after a week. Find a physical activity that you thoroughly enjoy, and any weight loss will just be icing on the cake.

Have fun!
